Barcelona are grappling with their injury woes this season, and relief seems distant. Seasoned left-back Marcos Alonso has remained on the fringes, but as the Blaugrana head into the busiest phase of the season, they lack the depth for adequate rotation.
At 33, Alonso faces a back problem akin to that afflicting Marc-Andre ter Stegen. Following the German goalkeeper's surgery to address the issue, Barcelona have convinced Alonso to undergo a similar procedure. The former Chelsea defender awaits confirmation of the date and time for his operation.
As reported by Diario AS, he is expected to be sidelined until early March. This absence will likely encompass much of their Copa del Rey campaign, the Spanish Supercup and at least the initial leg of their Champions League encounter with Napoli.
Despite Alonso's limited playtime of fewer than 300 minutes this season and his recent month-long absence due to the recurring back issue, Xavi Hernandez finds himself with Alejandro Balde as the sole natural choice at left-back and Joao Cancelo at right-back.
While others like Sergi Roberto, Jules Kounde, and Ronald Araujo have filled in at right-back, the frequent reliance on Cancelo and Balde is poised to impact their form and increase the risk of injury. It appears that this season will mark Alonso's final tenure at the club, with Atletico Madrid expressing a keen interest in acquiring his services.
Earlier SPORT reported that FC Barcelona have made their plans for the next season and it begins with the departure of two players, Sergi Roberto and Marcos Alonso.
Alonso arrived at Blaugrana in 2022 and has been struggling to get regular playing time as his role has been reduced to a bench player. His constant struggle with injuries and unsatisfactory display on the pitch forced Xavi Hernandez and his staff to refrain from trusting the Spaniard.
Both players are running out of contract in June 2024. Alonso is keen to find a new club to get regular playing time.
Alonso’s departure is certain, both the club and the player want a way out as Barca would be easing their financial problems by letting the Spaniard go and the 32-year-old would get what he wants, playing time.
Atletico Madrid expressed interest in Alonso last summer and might consider him again in 2024. He also has potential options in the Premier League. Barcelona will communicate their decision to both players in January, allowing them ample time to explore opportunities with new clubs.
